By now anyone who knows anything at all about me knows that I am going on a “voyage.” I like to call it a voyage because essentially I am departing everything I know to explore the world. You may be saying to yourself “Who is this chick and why does she think she’s the next Christopher Columbus?” I don’t really think I’m the next great explorer just a person who wants to educate myself first hand by touring this vast planet!
To be quite honest, I never thought I would actually have the opportunity to do such a trip! So when the opportunity presented itself you better believe I was all over it! This has always been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl. My family traveled almost every year to various places. Currently I’ve been to 35 states and 4 different countries (outside of the US, of course), and to the Caribbean twice. This doesn’t sound like a lot but it is enough to get my plans underway and leave me wanting more.
When Phillip and I met we instantaneously became friends back in March of 2000. In fact it didn’t really take any time at all for my little “Scottish Mate” to open his mouth about wanting to travel the world. As soon as it came up in conversation we were determined to make it a reality. However, I wasn’t graduating from college for another year and so in the midst of planning I had to stay focused on my school work. After only 2 months of knowing each other we began researching and planning this trip.
Advice to anyone who is reading this: If you are planning to do anything similar I highly recommend to get your education first. I am a firm believer that the more time you have to figure yourself out as an adult the more you will appreciate other cultures, peoples and religion.. (But still be young enough to not have limiting responsibilities such as a family or career.) Traveling to various places is not all about trying different brews of the land,( although I’m sure this will be had), but experiencing life as the “people” do. You do want to remember your journey and not wake up in a mist of alcohol.
After this life changing event has come to a close I plan on going back to school. Believe me though, traveling is not over! I will plan other “vacations” through out my life but you can only do so much in a year! For 10 years now I’ve had a dream of becoming a Physical Therapist. I fully plan on making this dream a reality. I’ve already started preparing by taking the GRE and working in the field. The rest is for later!
Life is way too short to stress yourself out in the first 25 years of life. I figure if I am in my career by the time I’m 28 or 29 I’m in good shape and I know I will be just as committed as my co-workers who are 24 or 25 and fresh out of school.
I want to thank all of the people in my life who have supported me on this decision and allowed me to explore the possibilities life has to offer. “Bon Voyage!!”
